With the NBA free agency period nearing, Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors is making unexpected moves. Thompson’s actions on Instagram, such as unfollowing the Warriors and removing most team-related posts from as far back as April 2022, have led to speculation about his future with the team.
Thompson has been a key player for the Warriors during his 11-year NBA tenure. Yet, his recent showings have been disappointing, averaging 17.9 points per game this season, the lowest since his sophomore year in the league. Thompson’s performance during the Warriors’ 2022 title run was a subject of controversy and scrutiny.

Thompson can now sign a contract extension worth up to $223 million over four years, but negotiations have labeled this offer as “unrealistic.” According to a source within the league, Thompson is willing to accept a shorter contract without being motivated by money or his position in the lineup. Some team insiders view offering him a two-year extension to remain with Steph Curry and coach Steve Kerr until 2026 as a feasible choice.
Even with this progress, it is important to acknowledge that social media trends may not foresee a player’s future. Similar actions have been taken by other athletes such as Deebo Samuel in the past to settle their contract disagreements. Samuel stopped following his team before the final year of his rookie contract and later agreed to a three-year extension with the San Francisco 49ers.
