The Dallas Mavericks’ surprising path to the NBA Finals ended with a defeat of 106-88 in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics. The Celtics secured the title, while the Mavericks pondered a season that was both remarkable and difficult. Despite being the fifth seed in the Western Conference, Dallas managed to overcome major challenges by beating three teams with more than 50 wins, which included the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, the third-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves, and the fourth-seeded LA Clippers.
The Mavericks had a season full of highs and lows, beginning with a training camp in September and a 12-day international journey visiting Abu Dhabi and Madrid. Doubts arose regarding the potential partnership between Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the influence of newcomer Dereck Lively II, and the team’s defensive progress prior to trades made before midseason. In spite of these difficulties, Dallas managed to achieve a 50-win season that resulted in their participation in the finals.
A Time of Progress and Drive
This offseason, the Mavericks are in a unique situation from the previous year. Doncic showed pride in his team for making it to the Finals despite major changes midway through the season.
I’m feeling fantastic. We executed some fantastic maneuvers. “We have been in a relationship for five months,” Doncic stated. I am proud of each player who played, the entire coaching staff, and all the support staff. We may not have been victorious in the Finals, but the season was fantastic, and I am proud of each and every team member.
When Game 5 ended, Doncic and Irving hugged, pledging to work together in the following season with the confidence that they can win a championship. “Simply remain united, dude. Doncic expressed astonishment at having Kai as part of their team. “We declared, ‘We will unite in battle in the upcoming season, and our faith is crucial.'”
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving envision strong potential for the Dallas Mavericks after losing in the NBA Finals. They’re ready to compete next to each other next season.
Doncic: “Just stay together, man… We’ll fight together next season…”

Kyrie Irving’s Perspective
While Irving struggled during the NBA Finals, he felt the Mavericks answered many questions about their capabilities this season. He sees significant opportunities for the team to build on their achievements, understanding what worked and where they fell short against Boston.
Irving mentioned that this year we responded to many inquiries about our abilities, and now the focus is on maintaining consistency. I hope that we will be recognized as one of the top teams of this time period. Our recent champions have been different every year.
Irving and Doncic both have a positive outlook on the Mavericks’ future. Irving mentioned that he sees a chance for us to create a positive future, where competing for championships becomes a common occurrence for us. The redemption arc and the lessons I learned about myself, my teammates, and the organization made this journey my favorite season.
Jason Kidd’s leadership qualities.
The Mavericks coach pointed out how Doncic had a significant influence at a young age by guiding the team to the NBA Finals at 25. Kidd thinks that Dallas should constantly be vying for a championship.
“At 25, reaching the Finals and playing at his current level, it’s all about being consistent,” Kidd explained. Having one of the top players globally means we should consistently be contending for a championship.
Doncic did not let injuries, such as a thoracic contusion, a right knee sprain, and left ankle soreness, become excuses for his performance. Doncic said it didn’t matter how much he was hurt. “I attempted to participate, but I failed to meet the required standards.”
Prospects and Choices in the Future
Irving did not make the cut for the USA Olympic team for the Paris Olympics, however, Doncic has the possibility to play with the Slovenian national team. Nevertheless, Doncic was hesitant to confirm his participation in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Greece scheduled for July 2-7. Doncic stated that he does not want to discuss what will happen in the future. “I need to make some choices and improve my health.”
The Mavericks have little time to decide their NBA Draft pick as they only hold the 58th overall selection. Although they have limited choices for making major changes, there is a belief that being patient and promoting continuity could lead to even better outcomes.
Building Around Key Players
The Mavericks will continue to build around their star backcourt of Doncic and Irving. They also have a promising one-two punch at center with Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, and a versatile wing in P.J. Washington. Other key players, including Dante Exum, Josh Green, and Maxi Kleber, add valuable depth.
A top priority for Dallas is the future of Derrick Jones Jr. Both sides want a new contract, but his performance on a one-year, minimum contract has likely earned him a higher-paying deal.
The Mavericks must evaluate if internal progression justifies bringing back largely the same team or if additional roster changes are needed. They struggled against Boston’s offense, which used a combination of five-out and four-out, one-in with a guard roaming in the dunker spot. Dallas may need another wing to handle larger matchups on switches and more reliable shooting to open the lane for Doncic and Irving to attack downhill.
The Importance of Continuity and Development
As the Mavericks reflect on their finals run and prepare for the future, the emphasis will be on continuity and development. Maintaining the core of their team while addressing specific needs could position Dallas as a perennial contender.
Doncic and Irving’s commitment to fighting together next season sets a positive tone for the offseason. With their leadership and the support of a talented roster, the Mavericks have the potential to build on their successes and aim for a championship.
