After the confetti landed on the court in Phoenix, DJ Burns experienced a combination of feelings. The star player from NC State had recently guided his team to an unlikely journey to the Final Four, concluding a fairytale that would be remembered for a long time. However joyful he was, Burns still had a nagging sense that something was unfinished.
He admitted to CBS Sports in an honest interview that he didn’t find as much pleasure in it as he should have. I was heading directly back to the room, making sure to avoid anything that might obstruct my path. If given another opportunity, I would certainly have appreciated it a bit more.
Burns’ remark might have been unexpected for followers who had developed an appreciation for the gentle giant’s skills and personality in March Madness. However, it was a common feeling for an individual who had recently experienced a demanding and strenuous competition.
Nevertheless, what stood out was the remarkable change that Burns experienced after finishing college. The center, standing at 6’11”, lost a remarkable 45 pounds, a weight reduction that would appear drastic even for a person who had already reached success at the top level.

Reflecting on his struggles with his height during childhood, Burns expressed that he didn’t enjoy standing out so much because it made him feel like he was younger than he actually was. It felt as if I was meant to start college at the age of 14. I often felt somewhat uncomfortable in those situations.
However, as Burns gets ready for the 2024 NBA Draft, he is accepting his new body and leveraging it to launch his next phase. No longer does he worry about his size; now, he is dedicated to becoming the best version of himself.
Burns refers to it as “The mission” – a private journey to enhance his physical and mental well-being. He has eliminated bread and soda from his diet, choosing to consume healthy smoothies and avocados in their place. He has exchanged his relaxed lifestyle for a demanding exercise plan, including medicine ball slams and rope pulls.
The outcomes are remarkable. Burns has never experienced more strength or energy in his life. He’s also observed a notable reduction in back pain, a problem he has dealt with for many years.
He proudly stated that he had never had to work so hard and be so disciplined before. I believe that all the knowledge I’ve gained will benefit me in the league or any future basketball endeavors.
Even though he is not seen as a likely choice for the second round of the draft, Burns still believes in his skills. He has been asked to participate in team workouts with teams like Brooklyn, Cleveland, Houston, and Milwaukee, showcasing not only his game tape but also his strong work ethic and improved physical fitness that initially caught people’s attention.
Burns is aware that many questions exist regarding the translation of his game to the professional level. However, he quickly mentions that he has never been part of a losing team throughout his life, as his teams at Tennessee, Winthrop, and NC State had a combined record of 150-53 during his time there.
Currently, Burns can only wait and find out if his name will be chosen on draft day. Regardless of whether it occurs or not, he’s prepared to leave a lasting impression no matter where he ends up – whether that be Summer League or beyond.
Considering his history of success and significant influence during games, it would not be unexpected for Burns to excel in whatever comes next for him.
